Exhaust flap whistles – TPI 2065515/5

< 1 min read

VWN issues the following note with TPI 2065515/5:

Problem:

Customers report whistling noises when accelerating, especially when the engine is cold. This noise typically occurs in the first 1-2 minutes after starting.

Cause:

The exhaust flap in the rear part of the exhaust system specifically throttles the exhaust gas mass flow in order to bring the front exhaust components up to operating temperature more quickly after a cold start. The flap is closed wide in the process. When the engine accelerates strongly or revs up, a high exhaust gas mass flow is created, which can only pass through a small cross-section. The increased flow velocity then causes the whistling noise.

Solution:

Technical, not a defect: The noise is a normal characteristic of the exhaust system and is not a defect or warranty case. No replacement required: It is not necessary to replace the electric actuator, the exhaust flap or the exhaust pipe with catalytic converter.
