New dry separation toilet for our Grand California – Toni Toi Open

What again?! …some of our loyal readers will certainly think at this point. As far as first correct, we had decided in December 2022 for a new toilet from Toni Toi.

What today is called Toni Toi Classic by Anna & Paul, the founders of Toni Toi, is now one product richer, Toni Toi Open.

After our conversion, we were in constant exchange with Anna & Paul and shared our tests and experiences with them. The two of them always have an open ear for things that may not be as good as they seem at first glance. With advice and action, the two are always on hand.

We really learned to love our Toni Toi Classic last year, because since the conversion we are finally independent of disposal stations. We can dump the solids into a bag and dispose of it through the trash and dump the urine canister into a regular toilet. What annoyed us a bit most of the time, though, was the aiming. Yep exactly, we just need to write about this topic openly, otherwise you might not see any advantage in Toni Toi Open.

The opening of the Toni Toi Classic is namely exactly the same as in the normal Thetford bowl and with a 💩 it can also times not fall directly into the hole. This makes cleaning -including the flap and seal- so completely without water really difficult in parts and not really nice.

Anna & Paul but have a solution for us 😌, Toni Toi Open.

Toni Toi Open

The big difference in this variant is the opening in the toilet bowl, where in Toni Toi Classic the orignal Thetford cassette was converted, now a completely self-developed cassette is used.

New toilet bowl

The picture shows the difference from the original opening very clearly. A 💩 now fits much better through this opening, even if you are not so precise with the aim.

New toilet cassette

The new cassette, like the Toni Toi Classic conversion, consists of two parts.

  1. The solids tank, which is now completely open.

The original suction vent can also continue to be used.

  2. The urine container

As with the solids tank, the urine tank is a proprietary development.

Here, in contrast to Toni Toi Classic, there is a real highlight. While the cassette could still overflow in the Classic variant, it is virtually impossible with Toni Toi Open. Just before the cassette is full, the urine no longer drains completely from the top of the bowl. If you now open the disposal chute and turn the opening of the canister (on the left in the picture), by one turn, the rest will run out of the line into the container. The overflow protection is developed exactly so that the rest of the business can run after without a drop overflowing!
A serious advantage for us is also that the urine canister no longer looks like a chemical toilet, which actually saves many discussions…

Both together fit into the original toilet well without any further modifications.

We were very satisfied and happy with our Toni Toi Classic throughout the year, however, the difference to the Open variants is already really very very big. This even in the truest sense of the word 🫣 Disposal has become even easier due to the opening of the solids container and there is the possibility to use bags, which is also much more convenient when the solids are sometimes not so solid.

Not everything is perfect, not even at Toni Toi Open. There is an odor nuisance due to the bowl being open at all times, even the SOG doesn’t do much about that. The Toni Toi Classic uses the original flap from Thetford, this is now no longer possible. But Anna & Paul wouldn’t be Anna & Paul if they didn’t work on a solution. Thus, there will also be a lid for the Toni Toi Open variant, which will then also solve the odor problem again.
