Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles offers quite a long list of optional equipment at the factory. Among them, you’ll also find the popular Lane Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition features. With current surcharges of 595 euros for Lane Assist and around 387 euros for traffic sign recognition, you’ll have to put just under 1000 euros on the table when ordering for both.
There is a simple way to unlock these two functions practically free of charge. The prerequisite for this is that the Grand California must have a front field camera (STG A5) and at least the navigation system “Discover Media”. You get the camera if the 175-euro “Light Assist” high-beam control system is installed ex works.
The wizards in detail
Lane Assist
Detects its own lane via a multifunction camera and corrects if it threatens to cross the lane boundary lines.
The two videos show the Lane Assist in action:
Traffic Sign Recognition
Can detect speed limits, overtaking bans, and time and weather restrictions with a special camera and inform the driver.

How are the wizards unlocked?
Unfortunately, there is no simple key combination that unlocks the wizards. However, these can be coded by means of a tool, such as VCDS. Below you will find instructions on how we activated the functions with the help of VCDS. The basic operation of VCDS we assume at this point, because with incorrect coding a lot can go wrong. Please do this only if you are familiar with the software.
If and how this works with other tools like Car Scanner, OBD Eleven or Carly, we cannot answer.
Coding Lane Assist
The codings are listed per control unit and in the correct order.
- Control unit A5 – coding – byte 16 – activate bit 7 (lane departure warning active / installed)
- Steuergerät A5 – Zugriffsberechtigung : 20103 – Anpassung
- BAPPersonalization” channel – set value to “not active
- Time of intervention” channel – set value to “late (setting via menu)”.
- Channel “Personalization lane keeping assistant at Kl.15 on” – Set value to “last setting
- Steuergerät 5F – Anpassung
- Channel “Vehicle function list BAP; extensionLDWHCA0x19” – set value to “activated
- Channel “Vehicle function list BAP; extensionLDWHCA0x19msgbus” – Set value to “Data Bus Extended
- Channel “Vehicle menu operation-menudisplayLaneDepartureWarning” – set value to “activated
- Channel “Vehicle menu operation-menudisplayLaneDepartureWarningoverthresholdhigh” – set value to “enabled”.
- Steuergerät 17 – Codierung
- Byte 04 – Activate bit 6 (“Lane departure warning system / Lane Assist installed”)
- Byte 11 – Activate bit 1 (“Lane departure warning system / Lane Assist Information (BAP) installed/active”)
- Control unit 44 – access authorization: 19249 – coding – byte 03 – bit 0 (“lane departure warning system installed”)
- Control unit 10 – access authorization: 71679 – coding – byte 03 – activate bit 5 (“lane departure warning with steering support installed”) // Only perform if the bit is labeled in VCDS!!!
After coding is complete, wait for the bus to stop (ignition off and wait approx. 30 seconds).
Coding traffic sign recognition
The codings are listed per control unit and in the correct order.
- Control unit A5 – coding – byte 16 – activate bit 4 (“traffic sign recognition (VZE) active”)
- Control unit 17 – coding – byte 05 – activate bit 2 (“traffic sign recognition installed/active”)
- Steuergerät 5F – Anpassung –
- Channel “Vehicle function list BAP-trafficsignrecognition0x21” – set value to “enabled”.
- Channel “Vehicle menu operation-menudisplayroadsignidentification” – set value to “activated
- Channel “Vehicle menu operation-menudisplayroadsignidentificationoverthresholdhigh” – set value to “enabled”.
- Only if ACC is installed: Control unit 13 – Coding – Byte 01 – Activate bit 0
We have performed and tested the above codings with our Grand California MJ2022. There may be changes in the software on the part of VW, which are MJ and / or equipment dependent. We assume no liability for the listed codings!
If you don’t have a VCDS or don’t trust yourself with the coding, you are welcome to make an appointment with us and have the coding / adjustments done for a few euros.
