Ten years of development - the organic high-barrier film liner from Clesana
In spring 2025, Clesana introduced a new solution for mobile toilet systems: the Bio High Barrier Foil Liner. The development of this product began back in 2009 with the aim of creating a hygienically safe and sustainable alternative to conventional disposal systems, especially for use in water-free toilets.
Starting point: functionality before sustainability
In the early years, the focus was on reliably sealing the contents. Petroleum-based plastics were used, as biologically based materials did not yet offer the necessary tightness or mechanical stability at that time. The film had to completely seal in odors and moisture, making it suitable for medical and later mobile use.
Further development: search for bio-based materials
From 2016, the focus shifted more towards sustainable raw materials. The growing interest from the camping sector in particular increased the need for environmentally friendly solutions. Together with research institutes, various materials were tested, including lignin, vegetable waxes, talcum and natural resins. However, many of these materials could not be welded or lost their sealing effect on contact with moisture.
Technological breakthrough
In 2021, a new film material was developed that meets all the requirements: plant-based, recyclable, stable, weldable and with a high sealing effect. At the same time, Clesana’s existing system was adapted so that the new material could be integrated. Among other things, the temperature behavior of the closure was readjusted.
Testing and approval
At the beginning of 2025, the new film material was tested and confirmed by the Fraunhofer Institute for its barrier properties against oxygen and water vapor. TÜV Rheinland certified the product in accordance with the relevant standard. Series production is planned for summer 2025.
Application and outlook
The bio high-barrier film liner consists mainly of plant-based and recycled raw materials. The first use is in the mobile sanitary sector, with further applications in the care and healthcare sector already in preparation.
