If you are planning a road trip, as we all know, new German for journey, to the north of Europe, the North Cape is almost a must. The North Cape is the northernmost point in Europe that can be reached by road from the mainland and is therefore a logical destination. So you have something for the photo album and can directly tell friends or relatives: “We were there!”.
But is it really worth it?
The route leads from Olderfjord in the north of Norway via the E69 directly towards the North Cape. In terms of scenery, you can’t help but be amazed, Norway shows its special side again.

On the way to the North Cape, after passing Honningsvåg, the route goes strongly uphill through a picturesque mountain landscape.

At the end of this road you reach the North Cape. Well, and then what? You have arrived at the very destination that is supposed to be so special. However, the place does not exude magic at all, it is crowded and above all expensive. If you want to stay here for one night (in the summer months), you should pay about 60 euros for it. It’s definitely not worth it. Don’t get us wrong, scenically it’s just as beautiful as the 50 kilometers before, but just a place designed for commerce.

The globe at the North Cape, everyone who went there wants to take a picture with the only landmark there.
We don’t regret going there, only if we had known that beforehand, the decision would probably have been different. The way there or better the surroundings is much more exciting. Overnight stays are usually free of charge and probably more sheltered from the wind. If you are planning a trip to the north of Norway, then visit for example the small village Havøysund. There is much less going on here and it is easier to find a place to spend the night.
Just visiting a place to say you were there is usually not a good idea, we learned that through this as well.
